So, you've booked your adventure with Windward Retreats! Whether you're staying in one of our cozy cottages in the heart of Snowdonia or enjoying the unique experience of our glamping pods at Emlyn's Coppice, you’re in for an unforgettable time.
North Wales is a place of breathtaking beauty and wild landscapes, but it’s also famous for having four seasons in one day! The key to a perfect holiday here is simple: preparation. To help you get ready, we’ve put together the ultimate packing guide so you can focus on making memories.
1. The Essential Clothing (Layers are everything!)
The secret to staying comfortable in Wales is dressing in layers. A sunny morning can quickly turn into a cool afternoon shower, so you’ll want to be prepared for anything.
Waterproofs: A good quality, lightweight waterproof jacket and trousers are non-negotiable. You’ll thank us for this!
Warm Layers: Pack a couple of fleeces or warm jumpers. They’re perfect for chilly evenings and an extra layer on a mountain hike.
Breathable Base Layers: Ideal for any activity, whether it's hiking or exploring a town. Merino wool is a great choice as it wicks away moisture.
T-shirts & Shirts: For warmer days or to use as your base layer.
Trousers & Shorts: Zip-off trousers are a fantastic option for walkers, as they give you flexibility. Pack a pair of comfortable trousers for evenings.
Socks: Multiple pairs of good hiking socks are crucial to avoid blisters. Don't forget some warm, fluffy ones for relaxing in your cottage or pod!
A Hat & Gloves: A warm hat is essential for mountain walks, even in summer, and a sun hat can be a lifesaver on brighter days.

2. Footwear (Your most important item!)
Your feet will be doing a lot of the work, so proper footwear is essential.
Waterproof Hiking Boots: If you plan on tackling any of the mountain trails around Betws-y-Coed or Llanddoged, these are a must. They’ll provide support and keep you dry.
Comfortable Trainers or Walking Shoes: Perfect for exploring towns, walking along the coast near Emlyn's Coppice, or for less strenuous walks.
Wellington Boots: A good idea for glamping at Emlyn’s Coppice, especially if the weather is wet, as they're perfect for navigating the paddock areas.
3. Hiking & Outdoor Gear
For those who want to explore Snowdonia or the Clwydian trails, these items will make your journey safer and more enjoyable.
A Small Rucksack: For carrying water, snacks, waterproofs, and extra layers.
Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated on the trails and reduce plastic waste.
Map & Compass or GPS: Even with a phone, a traditional map and compass (and knowing how to use them!) is a sensible backup.
Snacks: High-energy snacks like trail mix or energy bars are essential for longer walks.
4. For Your Windward Retreat

While our cottages and glamping pods are fully equipped, a few personal items can make your stay even more perfect.
A Good Book: For a relaxing evening in front of the fire in your cottage or a quiet morning in your pod.
Marshmallows: A must-have if you plan on using the fire pit at Emlyn's Coppice!
Board Games or Cards: A great way to spend a rainy afternoon.
A Head Torch or Small Flashlight: Especially useful for navigating to and from your pod at Emlyn's Coppice after dark.
5. The Miscellaneous Must-Haves
Portable Power Bank: Crucial for keeping your phone charged while hiking.
First-Aid Kit: A small kit with plasters, blister pads, pain relievers, and any personal medication.
Camera: For capturing the incredible landscapes.
Binoculars: To get a closer look at the local wildlife and stunning mountain views.
Reusable Shopping Bags: Helpful for any trips to local shops.
While this list might seem long, it's all about making sure you're ready for any adventure North Wales throws at you. The most important thing to pack, of course, is a sense of adventure and a camera to capture the magic.
We can't wait to welcome you to Windward Retreats!
Warmly,
The Windward Retreats Team
